Adventures in Beijing

Emma and I ventured out of the hotel for the first time today into smoggy Beijing. I *think* the sun is up, but it's hard to tell because of the haze surrounding the city. It's bothering me a bit, but Emma seems to be more resilient.

This is a typical street that we travelled on - very wide, and bicycles and foot traffic to the sides, and taxi's and private cars in the centre. There doesn't seem to be any discernable traffic rules - it appears to be every man for himself out here!

We picked up our event tickets, and good news - we got all the tickets we wanted, as well as tickets for the opening ceremonies, so that was a considerable relief. The mission staff handling the tickets were very helpful and friendly. After getting the tickets, we went into a Chinese grocery store:

It was really loud, with people all around inspecting the the goods for sale.

We've decided to head to the Beijing zoo today to see the Panda's - hoping to see the 2 year olds that were recently brought in from Sichuan province.
